A middle aged man, simply identified as ‘Baba Ibeji’ died tragically in the early hours of Wednesday, June 21 on the way to his work place.
According to eye-witnesses, the deceased, who was trying to navigate the terrible road through a makeshift foot path slipped and as he tried to support himself, held on to a high tension cable which electrocuted him instantly.
The high tension cable was reportedly left dangling recklessly by engineers contracted by the Lagos State government to construct the Ayobo to Aiyetoro bridge over the river that demarcates the state with Ogun state.
Eyewitnesses that spoke with GreenNewsNG’s Daniel Fayemi expressed disgust at the sheer carelessness that saw the site engineers leave a high tension cable at such close proximity to a foot path that many people struggle to navigate.
“This is rather unfortunate. I saw it happen because he was in front of me when he slipped and held the wire for support. I can’t even blame the man for holding the wire because it can happen to anyone. The question is what was a high tension cable doing so close to where so many people pass everyday. The people doing this road just sacrificed this man’s life for nothing,” a teacher, Mrs. Onafowokan lamented.
Another eyewitness, who gave her name simply as Modinat, said that she knew the deceased and said he was called ‘Baba Ibeji’ (Father of Twins). Speaking with our correspondent in Yoruba, she said that the deceased lived in Aiyetoro with his wife and children. She didn’t say much, however, as she was too distraught and sobbed intermittently.
